sneak peek: Nordstrom Anniversary Sale

I was able to shop the pre-sale last week for the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale, which for those of you who are unfamiliar, is like Christmas in July. This year it’s basically at the same time as Neiman’s Last Call so your credit card might be getting some exercise this week! It’s one of the only sales that exists where they put fall trends on sale before they come out in the store. Typically sales are the other way around since they are trying to clear out last season’s clothes, etc., but this sale usually is one of the absolute best of the year. I hit up every department, so here are a few of my favorites and some inside scoop on what I saw!

Shoes

The big push this year is for boots. They had various styles of flat motorcycle boots, and several different pairs of Frye boots that are apparently selling really quickly. Most of the Frye’s had a small heel and were more cowboy-boot ish. They also had a pretty decent selection of over the knee boots. They had a few with heels that were variably priced, some Michael Kors and Cole Haan, and a fabulous pair of flat Stuart Weitzmans that are really classy (far right of the picture below).

I also really loved the booties that they had on sale. For booties it was mainly Sam Edelman, Vince Camuto, Classiques Entier and a few others, but my pick was the Vince Camuto peep toe booties in carmel. I really love the simplicity and the color and I think they will be very versatile for the fall. I also really liked the Sam Edelman booties because of the detail on the side and the chunky heel.

Bags

There were also some great bags on the sale… I was most shocked to see the Marc Jacobs quilted satchels on sale and Marc Jacobs quilted small crossbody satchels that retail for over $1,000 and about $600 or so normally. If you have eyed one of these for a while, it was a really great deal for a very classic bag. I also saw some Marc by Marc Jacobs hobos, Kate Spade, Coach, Tory Burch, Oryany and Badgley Mischka. My favorite bag of the sale was a Badgley Mischka satchel – they had it in grey, black and a camel color but I liked camel the best. The problem for me was that it dropped too low and the body of the bag was too big at that length on my body, so I passed, but for the taller ladies out there this bag is great (below, to the right).

They also have some Tory Burch zipper continental wallets for about $150 ish, and Ted Baker, Kate Spade and Marc Jacobs wallets and clutches as well. They also have a Lodis wallet on sale, which will not be as great as the deal I got on mine from Anthropologie, but I love Lodis and the design/simplicity of their wallets. I used to have a much bigger one, but I really like having less clutter in my wallet so if that’s what you’re going for it’s a good pick.

Accessories

Watches – If you have been yearning for one of the hottest watch trends of the year, an oversized piece of bling for your wrist or a white ceramic timepiece they have some great deals! Michael Kors, Juicy Couture, Emporio Armani and several other watch designers had a few watches on sale.

If I was in the market for a second watch, I definitely would’ve snagged this black Michael Kors watch.

Sunglasses – In terms of sunglasses, they didn’t have as many trendy styles as I would’ve liked to see. I wanted to see some more funky aviators and stuff, but they did have a couple of awesome deals. They had several styles of Gucci on sale, including a personal favorite of mine – the Gucci horsebit sunglasses. These retail for close to $500 and are on sale for $149.

Jewelry – I was less than impressed with the jewelry selection. If you like the design of Lagos, they had a couple bracelets on sale, but aside from that I didn’t see anything that really caught my eye.

Clothes

Sweaters – While I don’t ever feel like the clothes are as big of a deal as the shoes during this sale, they did have a few fun things. I noticed they had a ton of open sweater/cardigans in many different styles, colors and price ranges. I absolutely love sweaters like these, but I already have a ton so I wasn’t in the market. Here was my favorite though – I love the gray with white stripes and it’s a really great deal for a comfy sweater that is also really cute.

Jeans/Other- With Nordstrom Rack, online shopping like the ones you can find under Treasures in the sidebar and the fact that I already have tooooo many I totally passed on all of the jeans. I was hoping for cute boyfriend jeans but none were marked down for the sale. They had several pairs of 7’s, some True Religion, Citizens, J Brand and AG jeans. I think my favorite of the ones I saw were some skinny grey 7’s, but they didn’t quite do it for me. One of the newer trends recently is skinny cargo pants – they are pictured below. I wasn’t the biggest fan, but then again there are some trends that I can’t jump on the bandwagon with. This may be one of them – the last time I wore cargo pants they were from Limited Too, so until I can find a pair that changes that memory I think I will pass. But on to more talk-worthy subjects, there are several pieces in this picture that I really loved. I bought the Trouve drop-stitch sweater and I love it. Probably one of my favorite purchases of the sale because it’s not just a sweater and perfect for wearing with leggings and boots. I also love the Sanctuary faux fur vest because it looks more luxurious than most faux to me.

What to Know:

  • The sale starts Friday July 16th at 7 or 8 a.m. depending on what state you live in.
  • If you plan on braving the crowds on the morning of July 16th, prepare yourself. GO EARLY. You will be shocked at how quickly they run out of sizes (especially in the shoe department), but they should be better this year about being able to order it online and ship it to you.
  • Grab everything you like even if you’re not sure. If you’re at a big Nordstrom store that gets a lot of traffic you will be fighting through people and lines and absolute mayhem! Not to mention, won’t have many chances to go back and browse before sizes are out/dressing room lines stack up. My first memory of shopping this sale was about 10 years ago, and we had to take numbers in the shoe department like you do at the deli counter at the grocery store. It was crazy.
  • You can return things. If you buy something and decide you don’t want it, you can always take it back. I would rather have to take something back than not get something I later realized I wanted.
  • The sale lasts until August 2, but it will be really picked over by then. At that point, everything you see on the sale will be marked up to full retail.

That’s all I have for you, so check out the Nordstrom website here to browse the online catalog from the sale (I pulled all of the pictures from this catalog except for the Gucci sunglasses). Merry Anniversary Sale!
