When I first made the move to New York City, I had to sell basically all of my furniture and my roommate and I pretty much just combined the leftover of what I had with his stuff. We were so focused on getting settled that once we did, we kind of just took a pass on the living room all together out of sheer exhaustion.
I was so excited when the Havenly team asked to collaborate and makeover our living room space. One thing about living in the big city is there really isn’t much space to work with, and I was super excited to have their designers’ expert opinions on how to make it all come together and still be functional.
If you haven’t heard of Havenly, let me introduce them! They’re an online interior design service that makes decorating simple, convenient and affordable. You get assigned a personal designer who will take you through a quiz, phone chat, mood board options, and a final entire room design rendering to tailor a room to your budget, style and needs.
The best part is that once you’re finished you can see your room as it will look in real life (my favorite part because I’m so visual) and then you can shop the products directly from the design and they will ship to you just as if you had ordered from those stores.
For example, if you’re on a tight budget and need to find a small couch from IKEA and some picture frames, but want to invest in a beautiful shelving unit from West Elm – you can absolutely do that! All you have to do is give that feedback to your designer and they’ll tailor the products to exactly what you’re looking for. You can also mix and match products from the different concepts in your final design in case you wanted a vase from one option and the rug from another.
For our apartment we ended up landing on softer colors to make the small space feel more open. We wanted to incorporate more greens, blues and earth tones to soften some of the pieces of black furniture we have. One of the last minute changes was that we actually ended up going with a colored rug – the Phoenix wool dhurrie rug from West Elm – that we are loving.
My favorite piece of the redesign though was the two tufted ottomans for under our TV. We’ve struggled with filling that area with something functional but still attractive and I love the way they look against our focal wall. We added in some color with this herringbone throw and palm printed pillows and also scooped up a few little things to style the shelves with – a glass bud vase, a blue bowl that I’m storing our NYC matches in, and at some point we will fill our plant pot with a real plant when we shift a few things around!
Havenly was not only insanely convenient (all done online or over the phone) and makes decorating so easy. I love mixing and matching prints and textures in my outfits, but really struggle with how to make that work in a room and a space. Thanks to the entire Havenly team our apartment now feels even more like home! What could be more fitting as we come up on celebrating our first year living here :)
