wandering away from oblivion // turban trendspotting

Vintage faux fur coat, French Connection sequin blouse, self made Turban, Aldo platforms, Forever XXI skirt and earrings

The pairing of sequins and faux fur was inevitable, but timing is everything. I handcrafted a turban myself a few months ago (literally with some cloth, a needle and thread) and was waiting for the perfect outfit for its debut. I am in love with tights, platforms and a mini and when it all came together I decided to compile everything I had been dying to wear all into one outfit. I found some antique looking gold statement earrings from Forever XXI that kept up the vintage feel of the outfit and this faux fur coat is the one I discovered in LA here.

Before.. just a heap of cloth!

Sizing the turban was a bit tricky. I definitely had to use a mirror to see if the proportions and creases looked right

Ta-da! My finished turban. I went for a creased/knotted look.

I’ve been obsessing over turbans ever since Rachel Zoe stepped out in hers on The Zoe Report this fall. I immediately fell in love with the look, especially because it’s a fun way to make any outfit more intriguing. Turbans have hit the runways and gossip mags hard. You may have seen some in the movie Sex and the City 2 (even though I didn’t see it) and in various runway shows such as Jason Wu, Prada, Vena Cava and Giorgio Armani.

The problem is I have had a hard time finding ones that I absolutely love. Not all turbans are created equal. In fact, some of them are created terribly! Yes there are some good ones out there, but no they are not all very cute. I ended up making my own because I was so frustrated with the selection of turbans at an affordable price. My favorites that I fell in love with were by Georgia Nash – they look well made and are adorable. When I created my own, I modeled it after the look of hers and the one that Rachel Zoe wore. Here are some of my other favorites that are available:

  1. Georgia Nash Turban, closetbox.uk
  2. Norma Kamali Turban, $75
  3. Topshop Velvet Turban, $32
  4. Asos Knitted Turban, $24.14
  5. Topshop Brooch Turban, $36

If you don’t want to sew your own, check out The Glamourai’s version of a turban that you can make with a scarf!

There are variations that have surfaced which are basically turban headbands (turbands if you will). Twitch Vintage provides a great tutorial on how to make a cheap and easy turband yourself. I’ll be working on one as well when the new year rolls around so if you’d like it to be a tutorial let me know and I’ll try and explain how I make it (it should be much easier than my stitch and guess turban). Kourtney Kardashian got a lot of press for her turband by Gold Saturn that you can buy here.

I hope everyone had a fabulous holiday… I’m looking forward to the New Year and spending a few days (including my birthday!) in the mountains :).
