I think that everyone would agree with me (men included) when I say that shopping for men can be really challenging. I learned this at a pretty young age when we would shop for my Dad. I think for about 12 years or so we got him anything and everything he needed golf related – from gadgets to clubs and towels, he had it all.

Now that I have my Dad, MG and brother in law to shop for these days it’s getting a little tougher. I got a jump start on my holiday shopping this year and started thinking through how to shop for them. I’ve rounded up 12 ideas above as a great place to start, but here are some additional tips for shopping for the guys:

1. Find things that relate to their hobbies

My Dad’s favorite thing to do in his free time was golf, so we stuck with that. But what does your guy like? If he’s a huge sports fan you can’t go wrong with a jersey, hat or sweatshirt from his favorite team.

2. What’s missing from his closet?

Does he always wear that one tie? Get him a new one! Is his favorite plaid shirt 5 years old and has holes in it? Time to upgrade. Usually starting with what they don’t have or see in there is a good place to find ideas.

3. You can’t go wrong with staples

Whether it’s a new scarf for the winter, a warm puffy jacket for everyday wear, or a great watch that they’ll wear often, you can’t go wrong with the basics. MG has this jacket and wears it regularly and I see guys in these watches everyday. If you know he’ll wear it you know he’ll be excited.

4. What makes them the most happy?

Think about what really puts a smile on his face. Some guys love to unwind with a cold beer after a long day, so these beer chillers are a fun idea. If he’s into traveling maybe it’s time to upgrade his luggage!

5. When in doubt.. technology.

Guys will never turn down new technology. A new bluetooth speaker for the house or around the pool, an iPad, a new phone, or anything related to the TV. Totally safe.
