Starting A New Hobby

starting a new hobby, photography

This year since I didn’t make resolutions I’ve been checking in on the things I wanted to do more of. So far? Nailing it. (at least that’s how it feels!) It’s the best feeling to actually be almost a month in and not feel like a failure with “resolutions” – I’m telling you it’s not too late to change your tune for the year and give it a try.

On my list was taking more pictures when we travel. Let me come back to this in just a second.

I’m in the process of figuring out where I want this blog to go and what it gives back to me. There are the obvious: amazing opportunities, fun goodies I get to try and experiment with, a chance to share my style and life stories, and it has always brought me great connections and friends. But 6 years into this journey I can’t help but wonder.. what’s next?

One of my favorite bloggers just relaunched her site and titled it “Chapter 2”. After reading the post I realized it was a very fitting way to describe the change in her blog and life. Sometimes I feel like a cat because I’ve lived at least 5 lives at this point and am well on my way to 6. I’m itching to change direction here and share more of what is relevant to me now.

So back to photography. This is one of the few things I’ve been passionate about since I was a little girl and that has actually stuck with me. I can’t play soccer anymore (for fear of breaking everything) and I don’t love Skechers (thank God), but I’ll never forget my first camera and how excited I would be to go get my film developed.

It was one of my grandfather’s favorite passions and I’d like to think it’s something we will always share. As often as I take pictures for my blog or on Instagram you’d think I would know more than I do. The truth is I only know enough to get by. This blog has never been my full time job (just a midnight oil burning side hustle) so I haven’t invested the time in learning it all the right way.

This year I’ve decided it’s going to be different. Photography is something that once I know I’ll be able to carry with me forever and will only get better with time (like one of my other favorites, wine!). So I’ve decided to learn from the very beginning the basics of photography and share the process and lessons with you guys.

I’ll go out on a limb and guess that many of you guys dabble yourselves or wonder when you see a photo on Instagram how they achieved that look or style. I already have a ton of knowledge of tools and basics, but I’m excited to start from scratch and learn together. I’m inspired by a dear friend of mine, Andrea, who took her passion in the past year and turned it into a job and I’ve been so blown away by her growth that I’m inspired to dig in and learn, too.

I’d love to hear what photography questions you have and want to learn along the way! I can’t wait to share this adventure with you guys. xx
