Holiday Style Tips

Getting dressed for the Holidays can be SO much fun, but also secretly really stressful. Do you wear a dress? A skirt and top? All black? Bright festive colors? Sequins? Plaid? Hair up? Hair down? The options are endless and sometimes really overwhelming.

To help you guys prepare for your own Holiday activities, I interviewed People StyleWatch’s TV Stylist & Market Editor, Joiee Thorpe, on how to tackle dressing for the occasion. As an expert in all things stylish and on trend, she’s given me a bunch of amazing tips that I’ll keep in mind even throughout the year!

Picking out outfits for the Holidays can be so tough! Where do you even begin?

[ Joiee ]  I begin with thinking about the newest trends.  I love dresses but there are so many fun things you can do now for the holidays with separates. This season I would go for a matching skirt and top (or crop top) in sequins, metallics or a fun fabric.  I am also into jumpsuits—the new dress!  Pair it with a statement accessory for a great holiday look.

What are your favorite trends that you’re most excited about for this Holiday season?

[ Joiee ]  I am always excited for sequins and sparkle but this season I am excited about feathers! Whether it is a feather skirt or just a top with feather accents, I am obsessed! I am also excited for the statement earrings and having lots of ear candy. Just keep layering!

“I have a company Holiday party to go to.. what should I wear that’s stylish but also office-crowd appropriate?”

[ Joiee ]  This is the question of the season. You can be sexy and appropriate at the same time! There are so many options out there. Go for the trends but cover up in the right places. For instance, if you want to wear a crop top and skirt DO NOT show your belly button but just a smidge of skin. Also tight + short = inappropriate, so stay away from this combo.

For the gal on a budget who maybe can’t go out and buy an entire new outfit or dress, what are your tips for amping up wardrobe staples or an LBD to make it feel extra special for the Holidays?

[ Joiee ]  Accessories, Accessories, Accessories!!!! That’s my motto. Accessories are the key to dressing up something you already have no matter how simple it is. A glitzy clutch, bold jewelry or a standout shoe can embellish any outfit.

For Holiday parties, take us through a few different outfit options for a few different type of occasions! What do you recommend wearing for each?

[ Joiee ]  For an office party, you could try an embellished dress like this one from Shoshanna. It’s still sophisticated, but tasteful.

For a Black Tie party, a long dress is a great option and this sequined number by Milly will undoubtedly make you standout in the best way.

For a Friends party, something fun and a little sexy like this bow front dress with side cutouts or this sequin and fringe dress by ASOS.

For a Family Gathering, try an embellished top (or one with feathers) and a great pair of jeans. Something cute and comfortable!

You mentioned accessories are key – why do you love them so much and which are your go-to’s?

I was the Accessories Editor for Teen People magazine back in the day, where I had to find amazing accessories for our fashion pages. I always need an amazing bag each season and right now I am into layering thin jewelry.

Any other styling secrets you’d like to share?

For me it is not about the price but how clothing looks on you :). Wear what works best for you!
